    We'll find out tomorrow

BTW...what is the high end Merom processor? Is there a lower end processor? If there is the higher, faster one would go into the MBP while the lower end C2D is in the MB so you still have a discrepancy that warrants a higher price point. :cool:Top Merom is 2.33GHz and should be standard on both top 15" and 17" models - def the 17". Bottom of Merom is 1.66GHz and 1.83GHz with a 2MB shared L2 cache. 2GHz, 2.16GHz and 2.33GHz models have a 4MB shared L2 cache.

That's why the 2GHz Merom MacBook will be such a strategicly positioned superior product for the money and why the mini will still be crippled even when it switches to C2D at the same speeds. 2.33GHz is only 16.5% faster - not so much that you would even notice most of the time.

Only reason Merom MBP may not be announced tomorrow is for marketing reasons - not because it isn't ready. While they continue to manufacture them and build up a large inventory, we may have to endure these other product announcements so Apple can get all the heat focused on them until later this month when they can have the new MBP deployed worldwide in large quantities and be able to say "on sale today." and "Let the feeding frenzy begin."

On the other hand, because of Apple-Expo Paris, I think the MBP still has a better than 50% chance of being introduced tomorrow. Three years ago they introduced the revoluitonary Aluminium 15" PowerMac G4's @1.25GHz with USB 2 and FW 800 for the first time in a mobile Mac. I bought one a month later when Panther was introduced.

I really hope that Apple sees trends like this and realizes it's time to change their game plan. No more once a year phones. Time to kick the innovation level up a few notches. Time for over the air OS updates, over the air app installs, wireless syncing and everything else Android has offered for some time now.

iOS does over the air app installs. Other than that, yes I agree that Apple needs to do those things.

Oh, and I use Android because it's the only option on my carrier (its the least repulsive option anyway). But it sucks, and doesn't seem to be getting any better. I think the only reason it is seeing growth like it is is because of cheap hardware, and, as in my case, being the only real option on certain networks.

Android is funded by target advertising? I didnt know that, can you provide a link that backs this up?

Android costs money to develop. Android from what has been put out there is free for companies to use with no licensing fee. So how is Google able to generate money to pay people to code and maintain the software?

    1. Google is generating money through it's normal search business which is well documented to know where you are at (physically and on the web) and where you have been (on the web).

    2. Google is generating money through advertising generated via the Android platform. If this is the case, it would seem very like they would employ the same tactics used in standard desktop web advertising in the mobile spectrum. So logic and past actions would dictate but if that isn't enough then how about the patent Google was awarded for advertising on the mobile platform based on location? http://www.gomonews.com/google-and-the-art-of-self-defense-location-based-mobile-advertising-patent-is-probably-anti-apple-weaponry/

I have to respectfully disagree. Having a large monitor in a small compact desktop form factor was important to me. I have very limited deskspace, even less floorspace, and a variety of needs for the large monitor. You may call this "form", but as far as I am concerned, this is "functionality", since a larger package forces me to make other compromise in my life.

    Thats a totally valid point:)

Suction mounts are magnets for thieves. They leave a circular mark on the windshield that says "break into my car - I have a GPS unit for you to steal!". The thief will be very annoyed when they just find the Tom-Tom mount - until they figure out that they sell for > $100 LOL They will undoubtedly steal other stuff and break your window in the process.

I prefer the friction mounts that just sit on your dashboard and fit easily into the glove box. They are much more stealthy, and work great. Mine never slips or slides around. This is the one I use for my Garmin Nuvi:

    http://www.buy.com/prod/garmin-010-10908-00-portable-friction-mount-garmin-portable-friction/q/loc/111/204297424.html

Is there something like that for the iPhone? If so, I would like to buy one.

*edit* I did a web search and found that Arkon sells a general purpose friction mount that could most likely be used with the Tom-Tom mount:

    http://www.arkon.com/weighted_friction_dash_mount.php

They also sell a mount designed for the iPhone.

What's the difference? Number of icons?

lol I take it you DO think they look very similar. I see that they both use icons in a grid format. So tell me, what exactly are you suggesting would give LG the grounds for any kind of lawsuit? Or is it just the icons and grid (the rest of which has been done with phone interfaces before)?

And if you still think LG would theoretically have a case, refer to babbit's post:

The iPhone 1 was announced before the Prada phone. Patent dates showed iPhone implementation of a capacitive touchscreen phone at least a year before LG showed their Prada phone in 2006. The Prada shipped in small shipments before the iPhone, so that is their only claim that it was technically released before the iPhone even though real shipments occurred months later. Technically, if Apple wanted to, they could have sued LG.

Also, the Prada isn't a smartphone. It can't load apps. It doesn't even have a qwerty keyboard. You input text through the phone dialer like old school SMS.

    Don't give in Toyota!

Its our devices, and if we want to modify them for our own use, so be it.

How one big multinational company arguing with another affects your phone, I don't quite understand. Oh, wait...you're saying you WANT to make your homescreen a Toyota ad?

I tell you what, all you "I demand my freedom" folks confuse me more and more. The right to let Toyota advertise to you was never a big arguing point in the past for the radicals I used to read about.

I agree, things have just begun... the iPad just came out about 12 months ago.

    P.

Yes, the war just started and things are heating up. I would think the next few years will result in a tablet OS distribution that looks like this:

    iOS - 35%
    Android - 40%
    WebOS - 20%
    RIM - 5%

    Apple - 35%
    HP - 20%
    RIM - 5%
    Samsung - 15%
    Moto - 10%
    LG - 10%
    HTC - 5%

Maybe Microsoft will wedge their way in, maybe the percentages will be shifted around a little. But the growth of the tablet market will stabilize or at least stop growing at the rapid pace that it currently enjoys.

The point I'm making is that the hot market only seems to be lasting 4 to 5 years. 10 years ago, MP3 players was the hot market. 5 years ago, smartphones was the hot market. This year, it's tablets. 5 years from now ... who knows, but it won't be tablets.

I cant believe the problems which I have seen with phone companies in America. I have never had a dropped call in my life, my signal is almost always full and in Britain, almost every phone is available on all networks and sim free except for some phones on the 3 network.

Anyway I do hope that this phone comes out, my ROKR is shockingly bad and freezes every time I miss a call.

I also hope it will have 3G. The new RAZR has 3G which shows it doesnt have to be very bulky to use.

Wasn't it exactly the same story with the iPod?

Yep. And Palm doen't even know how to make a PDA right... Sorry, just my 2 cents and as much as I hate Microsoft: If there is one single thing that Microsoft's dullness department has overlooked so far it's the Pocket PC... Have a look at them next time you are in a store, compare them; have a look at their multitasking features, watch online TV on them -- they are by far not perfect and tend to crash (that's the Microsoft part in it) -- but they are still worlds better than any Palm out there.

I wish Apple would not only enter the phone business but also come back into the PDA market and show the Microsoft folks how to do it the Apple way. The Newton was fantastic and much ahead of it's time. In 1993 people just didn't know how to handle a PDA and didn't know how to integrate it into their daily workflow. Today, we are used to carry our iPods around wherever we go -- so if Apple could manage to enter the phone and PDA business via the iPod as a well known, emotionally positive vector (people buy the iPod because they want to listen to music and find out that it can also do much more than just play back U2 tracks), they could have a tremendous success.

Enjoy your brand new 129$ Mac OS X latest revision (the most advanced, the most unique, the most... bla bla bla bla...) carrying more than XXX features (aka... just making the Mac OS X experience more iOS-alike so you get used to AppStore since soon you'll have to go through this method of delivery as there won't be any other one, because Mr. Jobs wants more money...)
Yep... I think that 129$ sounds quite ok, for nothing :D

Though I'm not surprise... there's nothing shocking that they can implement. This "update" is aimed at training people into AppStore (aka money)... and they even charge for it :D

I lost braincells reading your stupidity.

Also, anyone who has used the lion dev preview knows for a fact that there are many major UI changes- easily the most significant UI updates since the release of OSX. But hey, everyone feel free to keep talking out of your asses.

That would be awesome. They should at least cut the price. MobileMe adds so much value to your iProducts, I have a MacBook, an iPhone and since yesterday an iPad, and MobileMe makes all three of them so much more valuable. But I know lots of people who would like to use MobileMe, but who say that 79 is just to much for it.

Where are the Android users that these stats support? I barely seen folks with Android devices. The vast majority clearly have iPhones. Maybe I need to be in a more tech centric urban area than Richmond, VA. I don't really care who's leading, I buy MY device for MY reasons, just saying from observation.

Hehe, up here in Arlington all I see is either iPhone or Android for personal phones, but everyone (in both camps) seems to have a BB as well...
