Well, I'm glad to see that Macrumors and Apple are at least able to focus on the big picture: product availability.

I could see iAd playing a role in this decision. Apple
pays for it through ads. Makes sense.

    It makes absolutely no sense.

Steve Jobs said iAd was a way to have Free or low cost apps on the app store and still get the developer a little compensation.

How does that translate into a closed cloud service like Mobileme? Apple isn't trying to be Cupertino Google here.

I remember gettign the original unibody 15" MBP and feeling like i couldnt read text cause it was blurry and just off for lack of a better term.

I returned it (and no it was not for the screen, it was the portability) and got the 13" 2 years later, and I dont recall the same problem.

I also recently got the 4th gen ipod touch, and have just fallen in love with the screen, I have tried to look at my friends iphone, and my kids previous gen ipod touch, and they just don't look right. So while yes it may be overkill for the human eye it is appreciated. I suspect moreso on laptops and devices that are meant to be viewed at close range.

    3. The 17" MBP is as thin as 15.4". Why does it have faster D/L SD ?? ..but it is much wider which allows for more space for the drive since the trackpad (IIRC) doesn't overlap it. It really is an issue of vertical space that limits the 15" MBP to the drive it currently has.

    Who is surprised? Not me.

    Android is for:

People whose carriers don't have the iPhone.
    People who don't like Apple.
    Geeks who have to tinker.
People who are willing to settle or be talked into something that "is just as good as the iPhone."

Apple's recently reported financials show that they are doing just fine. And will continue to do so. And as the iPhone and iPad halo drives more and more people to Macs, Apple will continue to grow.

I hope that Apple continues to make strides in phones and I think that they will.

While in the past it was kind of cool to be an Apple person when we were a more exclusive club that not everyone could join, the fact that my stock is over $350 and will continue to grow helps me get over that.

    My 2.

I wouldn't say it would be anything noticable!

Probably make the low end one a 1.66 Duo and the top one a 1.8 or 2.0 Duo

Doubling the cores would certianly be noticable on the low end! And even a modest bump is better than no bump for a year. But I still think a bigger bump than that is likely, chances of something like a merom on the high end are pretty good.

    Yes, didnt you know?

Every country outside the US lives in poverty, where families must raise 17 children to send them out to work, and must fight to the death over food.

Maybe Japan was a stretch, but the part about China is absolutely not an overstatement.

Or perhaps the entire debacle at Foxconn has fallen on deaf ears?

And I see people are still taking the word monopoly used here too literally.

Yeah, we know what a real monopoly is. Thanks.

And here in the U.S. It generally starts with a company getting too much of the market and stifling out the competition. That's why there's the FTC.

Ok, so if you know what a monopoly is, why are you ok with the word being used incorrectly? And the FTC still can't prosecute or investigate unless there is evidence of wrongdoing...based on the actual, legal definition of monopoly.

I don't get what you are trying to say. Is it that you know the legal definition of monopoly and anti-competetive, but you don't care because it looks like Apple has a monopoly, and think the FTC will investigate them based on how it feels?

Aelated to the subject line, if it were any other company, like Microsoft, Dell or whomever pre-ordering and buying whole supply lines knowing their competitors would be strangled, there would be an antitrust/monopoly case launched immediately. The simple fact that Apple is a media and government darling precludes them from any serious thought by officials that would choose to stop this monopoly from continuing. Just as above, I know 9/10 fans here will blast me for stating the honest truth, but.. true story bro. Apple can do no wrong and their fan base is living proof of that.

Apple is a media darling, but how is it a government darling? Apple has been investigated in the past.

Apple can certainly do wrong in its customers eyes. It is currently screwing over is true Pro customers. They are being slow in adopting a few new technologies that would leapfrog them (VFS, resolution independence). Many customers complain about the price (although Apple rarely lowers them, a hike is even more rare). Apple is currently straddling a position where they must cater to their growing casual users and their pro customers. And they are generally picking the casual, but also transitioning the Pros. For example, the new MacPros are a huge ripoff unless you go big...but you can get an iMac for a fraction of the price thats faster/equal to the low end MP.

There are many people here who like to say Apple only acts in its own best interest, and not for customers interests, etc etc. Please name ONE example where they acted solely in their own self interest to the detriment of customers. This does not count simple business decisions (like discontinuing Xserve since it wasn't selling well). Many of their decisions have explanations or alternative solutions...but then, that would make me a fanboy if I explained it I suppose. Apple is no angel but it is certainly no devil, and it is far more competent than most tech companies.

There are Apple fans out there, but also people who choose them simply because they like it better. If someone is an Android/Windows fan thats fine. I don't complain about any of their products, business decisions. or saturation of business as unfair. Mostly, because I frankly don't care; they haven't offered a product I have been interested in since college. I'm sure HTC and Samsung make quality gear, but there is no buzz around them. Its not because Apple pays people. Its because people, especially creative and non-computer saavy people (which means most of the population and opinion leaders) like using Apple products. If you think that automatically means the product sucks, then I can't help you.

In general, if Apple is so bad and its followers so stupid, then how come they are crushing in the tablet and music market, leading the phone market (in design, mindshare, and media coverage), and coveted in the laptop market (running the most profitable customers and setting the standard for design and quality)?

Its called results, or, figuring out what customers want from their computers.

Personally, I think we need to increase taxes across the board.

Which is exactly what I said. But you couldn't help twisting the dagger a little bit by saying ...

Democrats - "I am in favor of increasing government taxation, and I have the opportunity to put my money where my mouth is by voluntarily paying more taxes, but I am nonetheless not going to if other people don't."

So are you, on your own, going to voluntarily give money to the government? Or do we get to lump you in with your description of Democrats?

Intel is shipping Core 2 Duo Mobile chips (Merom) to manufacturers, according to recent Intel financial report (http://download.intel.com/intel/finance/earnings/IntelQ22006earningsfoils.pdf). A recent AppleInsider story (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1890) had indicated that Intel may have plans to move up Merom's formal launch to next Monday, July 23rd, to coincide with the Core 2 Duo Desktop variant ("Conroe") launch. Despite the move, availablility at the time was still not expected until August.

Merom is expected to replace Core Duo "Yonah" CPUs found in the MacBook Pro. Apple could use the 2.0, 2.16, or 2.33 GHz variants of Merom in its MacBook Pro line, each of which sport 4 MB of L2 Cache (up from 2 MB in current MacBook Pros) and have a 667 MHz frontside bus.

Apple would only be hurting themselves if they waited until the Fall.

People are ready for a new iPhone. If it doesn't come out by June, some will lose patience and buy an iPhone 4, or worse, will be tempted by the false promises coming from every phone offering 4G service.

Didn't read all the posts, but you realize there will be one like this soon:

Apple already has the iphone 5 in their warehouses. After the botched ipad2 fiasco, they finally learned their lesson.

Once the hype machine starts they will again make the iphone 5 scarce, so people stand in line, just to get press coverage.

    Feel free to add:-)

All Apple did was created a premium brand. Technology was cheap and affordable in the MP3 market. You could pick up an MP3 player for under a $100 bucks until Apple came into the market with its $300 dollar iPod.
And you still can buy MP3 players that are far cheaper than what Apple offers.

Apple did not come to dominate this market with cost competition. They did it by providing a better overall consumer experience. If you judge by specs, you'd buy a Sansa instead of an iPod. However Joe Consumer doesn't care about specs.

I think the next Mac Pro refresh will be a huge milestone. Not only will it be the first case redesign in nearly a decade and add all the latest tech (USB3, sata III, thunderbolt, etc) but I believe Apple will take this opportunity to finally revise the pricing structure. Over the past few years, Apple has been making a clear shift towards the consumer market. Part of that is arguably negative ("dumbing things down") but the positive is more reasonable prices. The Mac Pro is the only computer left that hasn't been revised. My hope is that Apple will create a few models of the new Mac Pro, at least one of which is an affordable mid-range consumer tower starting under the the $2,000 mark.

Unfortunately, they will probably wait to use the new performance desktop/server sandy bridge CPUs which Intel won't have ready until Q4 2011 (or later). If that's true then we won't see these new beauties until 1H 2012. :(

Yah especially with Final Cut X, you are going to see a mid size professional type of machine...they really need to work on the price structure...most of us can't blow 5-6K on a machine

I find the whole 'dumbing' down thing hilarious. Everyone that says that is scared of losing their elitism...I hear it from even the people in my post house because they are afraid of losing their jobs or their billable hours to an average joe that might just have talent but can't afford a DS.

Basically, what many of us have been asking / begging Apple to do; release an iMac w/o the display and with removable hard drives.

I sent S.Jobs an email about that years ago and told him they really needed a mid level machine that was an iMac but upgradable and without the monitor. I think a lot of us have been waiting on this machine.

Hey well my girlfriend just got me a kit for Christmas, and it works great. I've be on a trip with a total drive time of 18 to 20
hours, and I haven't had a problem, and it actually improves my iPhone 3g function since it doesn't have to use the native gps chip. So I think it is a good product. Good luck with BLT!!!

Glad to hear, and congrats! I just saw BLT has them in stock so mine will likely be shipping out tomorrow!

Can you cite reliable figures for the cost advantage versus the cost to switch?

Nope. Ask me what the cost advantage of wearing my Adidas runners over a pair of wooden clogs is when I go out. I couldn't tell you. But I can appreciate the obvious benefits of the metric system in theory and in practice without making it all about short-term financial gain, and I think you could too if you took the time to look at it objectively. I am just thankful my country made the difficult decision back in the 70s when my biggest challenge was learning to wee in the potty.

Hopefully they'll release the MacBook pros before Sept. 16 so I can still get my free iPod nano, but knowing Apple, they always wait until the end if their major promotion to introduce new stuff... Perhaps they'll update the MBP before then and the iPods after the 16th. I don't really need the latest iPod out there.

I'm holding off for the new MBP because from what I've seen, the current ones still have issues. It was Apple's first Mac to go to Intel, and although they've made some changes, it's still "first generation". I'm hoping the next revision will have more than just a processor upgrade.

That said, I don't see the MacBooks going with the Core 2 Duo until sometime next year. The Core Duo is a fine chip, and will handle pretty much anything a MacBook owner would need, and it would make the more expensive MacBook Pro seem more appealing.

You have a point there. I certainly wouldn't want to attend. But I wasn't saying I would want to. Nor was I saying that any of the eager masses should be able to attend.
The original post by Macrumors implied that this site is shut out of such events. Shutting out representatives sites such as this, which do much to promote Apple products is, I think, to some degree arrogant and perhaps spiteful. This site likes to penetrate Apple's notorious secrecy.

Even if they were invited, you don't seriously think this site has the resources to fly to London? Who cares if they are there, we'll get the news from the billion other sites that will be, and MR will mirror it.

Ever done graphics work or gaming on a laptop?

The graphics chipset makes a huge difference for gaming or 3d graphics like Shake. It doesn't matter at all for things like photoshop or final cut pro.

Has anyone ever considered that the media mac would not be a hardware upgrade to the mini but a software one via itunes 7 or is it just me?

A mini isn't really up to the task, you'd be better off with a more economical machine with some expansion, especially way more hard drive space. Pizza box or mini tower.

Why watch it on a 2.5'' when you can watch it on a 42''?

Try bringing that 42 on a plane. Apple will do both, tomorrow will bring a streaming solution and higher quality movies. A TIVO box is pointless, an airport can do the same thing cheaper and much more flexibly. I'm not sure why you're so worked up about this, ALL the rumors are saying apple will have a solution for the living room (although it will be an Airport, a new mac model would be secondary), so who exactly are you disagreeing with?

Jeez, why do people think Apple will make the movie store/movie management part of iTunes? That would be the worst decision ever, the two mediums and two markets are so vastly different they need two seperate apps!

If Apple can just release an iTunes-like app combining Delicious Library style management with playback and the movie store, they've got a winner.

Why make a new app when they can just update and improve iTunes? Seems like even you'd be OK with that, since you want "an iTunes-like app".

It's funny to see that people have completely forgotten about the Apple Expo in Paris, also tomorrow :D.

To me it is kinda strange that the expo starts 7 hours prior to the media event. Are they going to keep those black curtains (assuming there are some) during the complete 1st day of the event?

Excellent point. There's no way in hell they'll announce laptops at this event, but they could even announce them earlier the same day from Paris.

Apple is hosting (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060905144401.shtml) a media event on Tuesday, September 12th 2006 in San Francisco, CA at 10AM Pacific. The event will also be simulcast to a location in London (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/08/20060831122800.shtml) where journalists have also been invited.

The invitation to the media was entitled It's Showtime (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060905144401.shtml) -- suggesting Movie-related announcements. Rumors sites had originally expected (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060904073025.shtml) iMac updates during the event, but Apple surprised everyone with iMac (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060906091309.shtml) and Mac mini updates (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060906094056.shtml) last week.

This leaves iPods (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060904073025.shtml), a Movie Store (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060906185220.shtml) and the possibility of a new streaming Media device (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/09/20060904194920.shtml) for the Tuesday event.

As usual, a number of anonymous images have been circulating claiming to represent upcoming products, but these are all considered to be fake. Other circumstantial evidence (http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/ipods-invisible-in-ads-199610.php) has been reported, but no definitive information on the event.

As always, MacRumors will provide continuing coverage, however, access to these events have become more restricted, so please contact us (http://mailto:webmaster@macrumors.com?Subject=Showtime Coverage) if you are attending.

I think Apple is going to show impress us big time tomorrow. Here is what will be announced.

    * The iTunes Movie Store (iTunes 6.5 ou 7.0) with a few notable reworking of the iTunes Store to allow the integration of movies. I think if Apple is going to charge 10 buck per movie, it will add a few interesting twist to the 'DRM license' that goes with it and that would be part of the reason why only disney will be offered at first.. . The license is what makes Apple apart of the others... Studios will have to wait a see that the 'relaxed' DRM license Apple is proposing for 9.99$ is better than the others and people will realize that by buying 'in mass' so other Studios will come in... and leave Amazon Unbox... well, in a box !

    * iPod nano second gen. Larger screen, new enclosure. 4, 6, 8 gigs. May be a few more surprise in the nano (radio ?, movies playable ? we don't on this one, isn't it ?)

    * iPod Video full screen size

    * all the iPods with a color screen will be declared iTunes Movie Store aware...

All this will be the first part of the show... then one more thing...

There will be a 'media center' kind of box that will tap Airport Express technology in it and that will tie with iTunes as the source of the movies in the living room... the main interface will be Frontrow 2.0.

I think this the exactly the kind of incremental approach is going to take once again tomorrow to bring us Movies in our living room. A well integrated approach that includes all the piece (iPod, iTunes, Macs, and PC)...

iTunes is definitively the new plateform for content delivery...

I don't see this replacing the Mac Pro Tower. I see it as another solution within the Mac Pro family aimed at the Final Cut Pro Market where the use of several 3U Form Factor Systems would be used for Distributed Compiling/Rendering, etc.

It would be clearly also targeted for Engineering, Medical, Bio-sciences, etc where using OpenCL and GCD in their apps would provide a huge collection of streams/cores to leverage.

The Xserve was pretty much another solution too. Same hardware different form factor.

Yes, you are correct - once you are in science or engineering. But how many children never get there because of a system that over-complicates even simple calculations. All it takes is a couple of bad years/teachers/experiences to put a kid totally off of math. Truly brilliant kids will likely overcome these set-backs, but most kids are not brilliant.... they are good to competent. And good to competent engineers are needed as much as the ones who put landers on the Mars... oh, wait wasn't there a problem with one of those that involved non-metric measurements? (what is the smiley for "snarky" and "tongue in cheek"?)

I can understand the intuitive justification of this argument, but I'd like to see something more rigorous before I accept it. My own intuitive sense is that learning measurement systems, while important to early child development, don't, in of themselves (i.e., imperial or metric), have a causal relationship with math and science success (or failure) in school. I think there are other much stronger factors to success in math and engineering. One example: "male malaise" in the UK and the USA (a general problem in elementary and secondary schools); also, public school math programs are not rigorous and set the bar relatively low.

Everyone waiting on the Core 2 Duo MacBook needs to get a clue.

It's the same folks who were falling over waiting to WWDC to come so they could order their Core 2 Duo MacBooks after the keynote!

Apple IS NOT going to move the MacBook to a Core 2 Duo until they've updated:

    1) MacBook Pro

    2) iMac

    3) Maybe even Mac Mini, since it's been out forever!

The MacBook is barely three months old. It may get a speed bump and/or price cut soon, but won't get a new chip.

All of you saying Apple has to upgrade it to a Core 2 Duo to complete with Dell, HP, etc - why? Why do they HAVE to? Will they explode if they don't? Will the sun stop shining? Will all the world's puppies die?

Of course they'll upgrade it eventually. That doesn't mean it needs to be upgraded as soon as the chips are available. If you look at other PC maker's sites, most of their machines don't even have the Core Duo chips yet; there's no rush.

You can't claim Apple will inevitable act a certain way now that they're on Intel chips; you don't know that. They have no history of using Intel chips. Just because your bright minds think it would be a good idea to move the MB line to the latest and greatest chip whenever a new one is released by Intel because "that's what the other guys are doing," it doesn't mean Apple agrees with you.

What we DO know for a fact is Apple like to differentiate between consumer and pro lines, and Apple has never been one to put the latest chips into the iMac or Mac Mini level machines - and I don't see either of that changing.

    Well said! :)
